Getting rid of a yeast infection can be a challenging task and a frustrating one. You need all the help you can get, and you're probably already trying anything you can think of and a few things you never would have considered if you weren't so uncomfortable.
A number of simple home remedies are easy and safe and may provide you with some relief, if not an instant cure. Try one or all of them, and see if some combination doesn't get you back to your old self.
Apple Cider Vinegar Baths:
Run a warm bath and swish half a cup of apple cider vinegar into it, then soak in it for half an hour or so daily. Take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar by mouth as well, either in a glass of water each morning or sprinkled on vegetables or salad. Apple cider vinegar is a powerful astringent that kills yeast and many other harmful organisms and promotes general good health.
Anti Yeast Diet:
Many physicians will tell you that there is no relationship between what you eat and whether or not you come down with a yeast infection, yet studies have shown that diabetic women who bring their blood sugar under control also come down with fewer yeast infections. Try starving the yeast in your body of the sugar and starch it needs to survive. Cut out refined starch, sugar, fast food, canned and ready-to-eat foods, alcohol, cigarettes, cheese, chocolates, and nuts, and try eating fresh green vegetables, Greek yogurt, lean meats, and a very small amount of whole grains instead. You should see results within the first month, and as a side effect this diet will also make you healthier and slimmer too.
Buttermilk:
Many women swear that drinking two glasses of buttermilk per day keeps yeast infections away. Buttermilk is low in fat and calories and full of helpful bacteria and calcium, so even it drinking buttermilk doesn't get you an instant cure, it won't hurt you and it's very good for your general health.
Yogurt:
What you want is not the sweet fruit yogurts you find in the dairy aisle of your local supermarket but rather Greek or organic unflavored yogurt with probiotic cultures. Look for the terms probiotic, active cultures, or lactobacillus acidophilus. Some women swear by soaking a tampon in plain yogurt and inserting it every hour or two until the infection clears, but just adding this kind of yogurt to your daily diet can also make your body an inhospitable environment for yeast. You should eat probiotic yogurt daily even after the infection clears.
Grapefruit Seed Extract:
This is available in health food stores as a tincture or capsule. Dissolve it in water and drink daily as a home remedy for yeast infection. You can also use Olive Leaf extract, or Oil of Oregano in the same way.
Garlic Tablets:
Yeast hates garlic. Most pharmacies sell garlic tablets for use as oral dietary supplements that are perfectly safe to use as vaginal suppositories. Try inserting one garlic tablet per hour until you get some relief from symptoms.
Boric Acid:
You will find boric acid listed as a home remedy for yeast infections all over the internet, but be careful. Boric acid should never be taken internally and can burn your skin if applied in too strong a solution. Look for boric acid capsules specifically made to treat yeast infections and use according to directions. Never exceed the recommended treatment time, usually 14 days.
Home remedies for yeast infections can help you regain control of your body. Once you feel better, make sure you make permanent lifestyle changes to prevent recurrence of the infection. Cleaning up your diet, reducing stress, cutting out cigarettes and alcohol, and wearing looser, well-ventilated clothing are all sensible steps anyone can take to fortify the immune system and keep yeast at bay.
If you seem to continually get reinfected and you do have a regular partner, consider trying an Anti Yeast diet for a month or two for both of you.
Often men have symptom-less yeast infections that are never addressed, causing their female partners to continuously get uncomfortable recurrent infections without understanding why. Try treating both of you and see if that doesn't do the trick.
